Frequently asked questions

Does a higher bracket apply to all my income?

No. Each rate applies only to the part of taxable income that falls inside its bracket. Crossing a threshold never raises the tax on what you already earned.

Why are there two sets of brackets?

A Quebec resident files two returns: one federal, one for Quebec. Each has its own brackets, credits and rates. The federal tax is then reduced by the Quebec abatement.

Are the thresholds based on gross salary?

They are based on taxable income, that is, after deductions such as the Quebec deduction for workers. The combined-rate table brings them back to gross salary so both sets of brackets read side by side.
